  • Jasmin's Story

Jasmin Pierre has been highly instrumental in bringing a unique range of cultural awareness, Diversity and Inclusion to mental health education. Due to serious racial disparities in the Black community, she made it a mission to create The Safe Place -- a culturally competent mental health app for the Black community, which is available on Android and iOS. If you're looking for a raw, authentic, and energetic speaker, who uses her personal and cultural experiences with mental health to bring your organization unforgettable knowledge with a different perspective, you've clicked on the right website.

As a Black woman, Jasmin has faced racial disparities in childhood and adult life by the hands of the mental healthcare system. Jasmin's raw and authentic presentations on her personal experiences with mental health and growing up having a lack of access to mental health resources -- help her to bring meaningful conversations and much needed education, on the differences in Black mental health and the racial disparities it can cause.

The mission of Jasmin's company, The Safe Place app, is to bring more cultural competency to the mental health field.

Society has long ignored the cultural differences of mental health in minority based populations. Jasmin gives a dynamic perspective on how systemic racism towards the Black community has caused racial trauma throughout history.

She explores historical subjects such as slavery, lynching, Jim Crow Laws, Police brutality, discrimination in the work place, racial profiling, hair discrimination, colorisim, etc.

    Jasmin Pierre's Background

Originally from New Orleans, La, Jasmin moved to Louisville, KY with her mom and brother at the age of six, after her parents separated, and eventually filed for divorce.

While Jasmin's entire upbringing wasn't terrible, when she moved away from her dad, Jasmin's brother started to molest her. At the age of seven, she told her brother's counselor that he had been doing inappropriate things to her at home, but nothing was reported by the counselor.

Jasmin endured severe emotional and physiological abuse from both her brother and mother, throughout her childhood and teenage years. She decided to move away from Louisville KY, at age 18, to be with her father. While her dad was loving and supportive, the years of molestation, and family abuse from her mom and brother, lead Jasmin to battling major depressive disorder, anxiety, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, and anger issues.

As a young adult still living with her father, Jasmin went to college, held down a part time job, while she still secretly battled her mental health in severe ways. Her mental and physical health started to decline at age 25, after a severe overdose that left her in the hospital for a week.

Her father helped as much as he could, but neither he, nor Jasmin were really ever seriously educated about mental health; it's seen as a taboo in the Black community. We are told to pray everything away. The lack of mental health knowledge and support, lead Jasmin to having multiple suicide attempts throughout her adult life. Eventually, Jasmin came to terms with her mental health struggles, became a mental health advocate, and developed, The Safe Place app.
